Seeking: Assistant Editors

  • We’re looking for readers in POETRY or FICTION (not both). Volunteer assistant editor positions, 4+ hours/week. [Don’t submit in this category: see below.]
  • We offer: collaboration with other lit heads; editorialesque experiences; megalomania/a positive “work environment”/cookie emojis. We have often heard it said that reading for a magazine improves one’s writing and submission confidence.
  • The position: reading unsolicited submissions and rendering a vote to decline, accept, or someone-else-should-read-this-maybe-they’ll-like-it; meeting deadlines; participating to the extent you are able in promotional/social activities such as direct sales/consignment stocking (required), cafe clatches, author solicitation, AWP tabling.
  • Editorial work is remote, through Submittable and Slack/email.
  • You must: be somewhat familiar with and approve of Storm Cellar; have a well-developed aesthetic taste in prose or poetry; like writing different from what you’ve seen before; be ready to say something compact and informative about submissions within a short time; pass through a try-out period. Assistant editors substantially shape what is selected for publication.
  • Familiarity with the Midwest a plus. BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ perspectives are especially desired. Preference to those in the Twin Cities or San Diego areas.
  • EMAIL in one text document: your name, approximate location, and email address, a one-paragraph description of what you consider to be your qualifications, and a summary of your favorite item(s) from past issue(s), if any, including brief(!) reasons why you like them. No résumés. stormcellar dot editor at gmail
  • Open until filled or the end of September.
